Beyond The Finish at Kaynela – Building Life After Sport

Impact Sport’s Beyond The Finish programme recently brought Uganda’s elite athletes to Kaynela Farms in Kayunga for a three-day experiential learning immersion – a deliberate step in our mission to prepare athletes for life beyond active competition.

Olympians, Commonwealth champions, national team captains and coaches stepped away from training tracks and playing fields and into farms, workshops and enterprise spaces.

What unfolded was not a retreat, but a practical exploration of transition – centred on passion, discipline, humility and financial literacy.

Why Beyond The Finish?

Beyond The Finish exists to answer a question many athletes face too late: What comes after the applause?

The programme equips athletes with:

  • Financial literacy and money management skills
  • Entrepreneurship and agribusiness exposure
  • Mental health awareness and support
  • Career transition mentorship
  • Leadership and personal development tools

It is one of the core pillars of Impact Sport, alongside The Legends Marathon, Investment and Storytelling – forming a connected ecosystem that supports athletes before, during and after their competitive careers.

Learning at Kaynela Farms

Kaynela Farms, our agrisport partner for nearly three years now, offered a living classroom.

The cast included three-time Commonwealth champion (10,000m x2, 5,000m) Moses Kipsiro; 2007 Africa Rugby Cup winners Victor Wadia and Alex Mubiru; London 2012 Team Uganda captain Ganzi Mugula; Victoria Pearls great Naome Kayondo; Crested Cranes striker Favour Nambatya; and Uganda Rowing coach Batenga Nakisozi.

The athletes engaged in experiential sessions covering plantain cultivation, soil management, record keeping, stock taking and business systems.

They experienced farm-to-table dining under plantation leaves, visited vegetable gardens, explored fish ponds, toured the furniture workshop and interacted with young craftsmen employed on site.

The workshop – where chairs, tables, bathtubs and other lodge fittings are produced – highlighted the power of value addition and youth employment within community-based enterprises.

At the fish ponds, discussions focused on patience, structured growth and long-term planning – principles that mirror both agriculture and elite sport.

The athletes also experienced Kaynela’s expanding sports tourism infrastructure, including basketball and football facilities, swimming amenities and eco-lodge spaces – demonstrating how agriculture, hospitality and sport can intersect to create sustainable rural enterprise.

Power of Partnership

Beyond The Finish is not only about athletes. It is about ecosystems.

The programme is built on partnerships with organisations that share our vision of transformation through sport.

Our engagements include entrepreneurship and mental health sessions delivered in collaboration with development partners, reinforcing our belief that athlete welfare must extend beyond performance metrics.

Kaynela Farms’ journey – from undeveloped land to a structured agricultural and hospitality enterprise over the past 11 years – served as a practical case study in starting small, building steadily and growing with intention.

The consistent message throughout the three days was clear: Know your why. Start small. Build with discipline. Decide as a family or team. Avoid blame culture. Grow sustainably. These principles resonate deeply within sport and life.

Closing Reflection

On the final morning, the group gathered for a reflective session. Each athlete shared insights from the experience – not as icons, but as learners.

The consensus was powerful: transition must begin before retirement. Preparation must happen during performance years. Financial discipline, humility and vision must accompany athletic excellence.

Because medals may fade. Records may fall. But character, skills and systems endure.

Looking Ahead – The Legends Marathon

This learning journey feeds directly into our broader mission. The Legends Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, April 19, 2026, will take place at Kyambogo University Cricket Oval, with distances of 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km.

The marathon is not only a race. It is a platform within the Beyond The Finish ecosystem – bringing together athletes, communities, partners and supporters to celebrate longevity in sport and life.

Through participation, conversation and community engagement, The Legends Marathon continues to amplify Impact Sport’s message: performance is important – but preparation for life beyond performance is essential.

Our Commitment

Impact Sport remains committed to:

  • Empowering athletes with tools for life beyond competition
  • Strengthening partnerships that promote sustainability awareness and support
  • Creating platforms that connect sport, entrepreneurship and storytelling
  • Building systems that outlive individual careers

At Kaynela, the athletes were reminded that beyond the finish line lies another journey – one that demands the same discipline that once carried them to podiums. This time, the goal is not medals. It is permanence.
