THE RECAP

Reflecting on The Legends Marathon 2025 success and looking ahead to 2026 edition

The second edition of The Legends Marathon marked a pivotal step in Uganda’s movement for socially-conscious sport.

Held under the theme Run For Your Legend, the 2025 event doubled in size from its debut, recording 416 registered runners across 5km, 10km, 21km, and 42km categories – and engaging over 500 participants overall.

More than just a race, this edition carried forward the legacy of Uganda’s sporting icons and deepened its mission through the Beyond the Finish initiative empowering athletes in career transition, wellness, and storytelling. It has become a cornerstone of the broader Impact Sport’s vision.

Tributes were paid to Uganda’s fallen and living sports legends. Participants ran in memory and celebration of icons who shaped the nation’s sports story, as well as their own personal heroes.

Beyond The Finish: Athlete Empowerment in Action

In December 2025, forty active and retired athletes participated in an intensive entrepreneurship and financial literacy training delivered in collaboration with Stanbic Business Incubator, alongside a mental health programme conducted in partnership with Safe Places.

The sessions equipped athletes with practical tools to navigate life beyond competition – strengthening personal resilience, financial confidence, and long-term career pathways.

DR. MAGGIE KIGOZI: GUEST OF HONOUR

Our Guest of Honour, Prof. Dr. Maggie Kigozi – a former Ugandan multi-talented athlete, ex-Uganda Investment Authority Executive Director, entrepreneur and farmer -, shares moments with participants at The Legends Marathon.

Key Sports Legends Present

ROYALTY: PRINCE DAVID WASAJJA

Buganda Kingdom Prince, David Wasajja added a Royal touch with his presence. The Prince put in a 21km shift.

CHIEF GUEST: PROF. DR. MAGGIE KIGOZI

former Ugandan multi-talented athlete, ex-Uganda Investment Authority Executive Director, entrepreneur and farmer

As a former multi-talented athlete, who represented Uganda internationally across different sports discplines, the Legends Marathon speaks to me and gives great hope for the future

RUGBY LEGENDS

UGANDA RUGBY CRANES LEGENDS

Alex Mubiru expressed their gratitude: “We are very happy because the Legends Marathon perfectly aligns with our Rugby Legends purpose.”

MOSES KIPSIRO

3X COMMONWEALTH CHAMPION, OLYMPIAN

We need to empower each other. You’re a star when active and you need to remain one even after retiring. For the Legends Marathon, you can count on me 100%

NAOME KAYONDO

FORMER WOMEN'S CRICKET NATIONAL TEAM CAPTAIN

I run an academy and have done sports management courses. But not everyone has got that opportunity and that’s why the Legends Marathon is refreshing

GANZI MUGULA

OLYMPIAN (SWIMMING)

Most of our colleagues that we speak to are depressed, and some have turned into alcoholics. So we have to support initiatives like the Legends Marathon to help address that.

MUJIB KASULE (R)

Former Uganda Cranes player, Coach, Caf instructor, Director Proline Soccer Academy

Many people think the biggest problem former athletes face is not having money after retirement but it is loneliness; not having what to do and not being recognised. After 10 years of singing your name in the stands and getting things on a silver platter stops, reality hits you. You start asking yourself what to do. That is when problems start. And that’s why I’m very happy with The Legends Marathon initiative.

ALSO PART OF THE JOURNEY...

DENNIS ONYANGO

FORMER UGANDA CRANES CAPTAIN, CURRENT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS GOALKEEPER

It is a good thing to have an opportunity to meet the likes of Kipsiro, run with them and learn from them; it must feel good. I just watched them on TV and I would love to interact with them and share ideas on how we can transform our lives as athletes. Transitioning is a huge topic because at the end of the day, your body will tell you, I am done. Unfortunately, most clubs do not help much with this so when you have initiatives like The Legends Marathon that help athletes, it is a good thing. I love the idea from Andrew because people normally forget athletes when they retire.

FLAVIA OKETCHO

BASKETBALL ROYALTY: Former National Women's Basketball Team Captain, skipper of the JKL Lady Dolphins.

Don’t just talk about the change. Be the change, and that’s why I’m happy about the Legends Marathon.

DEO AKOPE

PROFESSIONAL GOLFING LEGEND

Looking at The Legends Marathon, I kept asking myself, ‘where has the government been on this?’ We have seen people die, people who’ve represented the country. I am 100 percent behind this initiative; this is supposed to be a government programme but I’m happy my friend here has initiated it.

MAJIDAH NANTANDA

FORMER WOMEN'S NATIONAL FOOTBALL CAPTAIN

The Marathon has come at the right time and it’s where we are going to raise our voices as legends of sport.

Whether you are a professional athlete or a running enthusiast, there is a spot for you at the Legends Marathon in Kampala, Uganda.

ABOUT US

Impact Sport is built around one powerful national moment – The Legends Marathon.

Impact Sport Association Limited (by guarantee) – simply known as Impact Sport – is a Ugandan non-profit organisation fully incorporated with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).

Every April, Kampala becomes a stage where health, ambition, culture, and community converge. Thousands gather to run, walk, cheer, and belong. But unlike ordinary sporting events, this moment does not end at the finish line. It opens a pathway to year-round engagement, purpose-driven storytelling, and measurable social impact.

Launched in November 2023, with its inaugural edition staged the following year, The Legends Marathon is more than a race. It is a family-friendly, mass-participation road run that celebrates movement, resilience, and shared purpose – bringing together elite athletes, emerging talent, recreational runners, and the wider community in one inclusive experience.

The idea was conceived by Ugandan sports journalist Andrew Mwanguhya, after years of witnessing how many sportsmen and women struggle with transition, identity, and opportunity once their active careers end. Impact Sport was created to respond sustainably – with dignity, structure, and hope.
